Three artists from different cultures are presenting their impressions of Asia through their own life perspectives. Rathsaran Sireekan, our Thai News Agency correspondent went to the La Lanta Gallery to talk to them and filed this report. “Colourful Souls” is a motley art exhibition of three female artists from Chile, Columbia and Thailand. They all agree their fundamental likeness is the love of Asia as a culture of exuberant colours. In this centrepiece of red brilliancy by Marjolaine Del Pino from Chile, the energy of colours can easily be felt. The kimono work shows how the Chilean artist approaches a typical Asian subject matter with the style she herself dubs “abstract, and yet decorative’. Amid the chaotic red patches, the calm, yet striking, gold and green Japanese traditional motif runs through this improvised version of Marjolaine’s vision of Asia. Here is another projection of the Chilean artist’s understanding of the Thai culture. A handful of Jatukam Ramathep amulets were gilded, thrown into a swamp of plaster sea and left half emerging. This outstanding piece was inspired by her impressions of the recent superstitious phenomenon among many Thais. The Columbian artist could not join us, but let’s turn to Thai artist Pensee Choosorn whose key subject matter is the elephant. In these brightly lit works, elephants are ironically portrayed as uncomfortable within frames of bright happy colours. Here…is another example of how Pensee reinterprets elephants—the national symbol of Thailand. Instead of seeing it as a disrespect to the Tradition, the artist urges us to see elephants in a new light. “I want to be modern and not like others. After all, this is the natural way elephants live.” said Pensee, Oil and acrylic artist. Indeed, the striking colours in the “Colourful Souls” exhibition not only refresh our souls. The collection also gives us fresh ideas on how to look at things around us we usually take for granted. MCOT English News. |
